Tripath TA2022
Tripath TA2022 Amplifier
Does the picture above look like a face?
- Heatsink - eye brow
- Electrolytic capacitor - eyes
- Speaker protection module - nose / mouth
- Cables - cheeks
This is my recent module purchase for my upcoming project - dual mono TA2022 90W power amplifier!
I've built Tripath amplifiers based on TA2022, TA2020, and TK2020 and I really like their sonic signature. Therefore, I'm building another ULTIMATE version to test drive the Zu Audio Soul Superfly high efficiency speaker.
Zu Audio Soul SuperflySome projects in the past are as below. It's a pity that I didn't take pictures of my older setups. :( Anyhow, that's life!

First close up view of the TA2022 amplifier module! I love the toroid coil at the output filter! The output filter design is one of the most important factor for having a good sounding Class T amplifier!
Modding / upgrade potential includes:
- Output filter capacitors
- Output filter resistors
- Power supply electrolytic capacitor
- Bypass on board bridge rectifier, switch to high quality SMPS
As the TA2022 is a stereo chip, power supply sharing is done for left & right channel. That is not beneficial for the sound - impact on crosstalk, power supply sharing / supply pumping and etc.
What I'll do is to use only 1 module for 1 channel. Everything will be done in mono block fashion. That will improve the sound substantially! 2 is better than 1 in this case. :)
Another view of the TA2022 amplifier module. The input capacitor is going to go! Something like Mundorf Silver in Oil would be nice!
So many modding potential! My hands are super itchy!
My friend that used the TA3020 amplifier I built had encountered burning the amplifier with mistakes on plugging out the source while the source and TA3020 amplifier are still powered.
That burnt the module but luckily his speakers are safe. So, in order not letting that happening to myself, this is a must although it would deteriorate the sound slightly.
For my friend's case, I got him an audio isolation transformer to be plugged in between the source and the TA3020 amplifier. Hope that improves the MTBF for his setup!
Be safe than sorry!
That's all for today's blog!
